Sitting on a chair and looking out of window, I see a sparrow and think, how lucky is she. She is not one among us. Among us! Yes I am talking about human-kind who is slowly and steadily becoming self-centric and selfish. In coming decades words like “Social” and “Honesty” will be found only in Oxford with a quote “Once Upon a Time”. You might be thinking that why can’t I see the positive aspects of human-kind since there are many of them, what’s making me so concerned that I have developed such view?
To understand my view, let me present you three aspects, first is how an individual is self-centric and selfish, how a group is self-centric or selfish and then how a state or country is the same?
1. How an individual is self-centric and selfish?
We feel sorry after reading in paper that someone died because of unavailability of blood. When we need then we ask from every possible source. But how many of us donate it to someone else when we ourselves asked for?
We cry for electricity and advocate for proper generation and distribution. And when the same is provided to us in proper manner then what do we do? We contact some “screw and pilaas wala” and slow down the meter itself. We are the same people who appraise after reading the paper that someone is caught in meter-fraud.
It is common to back-bite about the politicians but when it comes for voting then we support candidates on the basis of community. In school and college days we strictly oppose corruption in bureaucracy. But when we ourself reach on such designation then do we think once before taking bribe?

2. How a group is self-centric and selfish?
You will hear a group of people sitting in park every morning and discussing on issues written in paper. The group can be of locals, bureaucrats, doctors, politicians, etc. Reading the news for eg rape, they will use every possible wrong word for the culprit with added sympathy to the victim. But the scene changes when victim is found to be of their group or community. Now the same group advocates for the culprit and question on the victim itself. You can replace rape with other crimes or incidence, result will be the same. Once news flashed that a patient registered an FIR of rape against a Doctor. Seeing the report in news, the whole community of Doctors came in support of the accused Doctor and gave full support. They even threatened about possible mass strike and protest if any action is taken against him. The Dr is still practicing and not even put behind the bars for a day. The same can happen when the accused is found to be the son of politician. The worst part will be when CM acknowledges it. Similar incidence happened when a head of medical college of specific community was caught while taking bribe for admission. The accused was supported by his community and at the end, released.
3. Talking about state and country.
STATE-hood is very popular these days. We are Marathi, Assamese, Tamil, Bihari, etc first and Indian later on. This result in insult and violence against each other at native places. For what? Just for the name and support of specific state. Thanks god we play cricket. It provides us valuable 8 hours during which we consider ourselves people of country first. But exceptions can be everywhere. I know few people who want their country to lose matches just because their favorite players are sitting outside because of some players who are currently playing in (their thoughts). Stupid and freaky mindset.
Coming to the topic, it is easier to quote a country with a selfish and self-centric tag. Take example of US. Bin Laden was responsible for 9/11 so US declared full-fledged war against him. At the end US caught and killed Laden in Pakistan. Now do you all remember Bhopal gas tragedy? The culprit was of US citizen. US lobbied for the release of culprit knowing that the person was responsible for death of hundreds of people and handicapped of thousands others. What was it? Isn’t that self-centric and selfish thinking?

Conclusion:
If you will look to lower level, you will discover that the problem is far bigger than discussed here. I don’t know where the world is heading but I do know one thing. Reading books will not going to change it. It can only be changed by self-contemplation and self-examination. Think Once! Are you doing right? Are you setting correct example for coming generation? You may not get chance to correct your mistakes next time.
